Divine Calls And MeherbabaHave had a very interesting fortnight! On Janmashtami, went to a Krishna temple at night, with a friend who was feeling adventurous. There was a serpentine queue, but made it for the darshan! The atmosphere was charged with the vibration of the chant. Each cell in the body seemed to respond to it! One could almost ‘see’ the energy, as the devotees sang the Mahamantra as it cleansed the mind, and transported it to a high! For those who do not know,
is the Mahamantra. Last week, I went to Vaishno Devi Temple, a new temple that has been constructed on the lines of the original one in the Himalayan range near Jammu. It is in Malad, just 1 hour drive from Mumbai. One bent into unbelievable angles through a make believe cavern to arrive at the feet of Mother. It was fun! We sang bhajans for Ganpati! I believe that music has magic. It can remove the unpleasant effects that play havoc with our physical, mental and spiritual being. A few years ago I read a book called ‘The Sounds of Silence’ by Nan Umrigar. In that she wrote about how she had discovered that her young son who had tragically died, was being looked after by Meher Baba, a Master who is no longer in the body. This knowledge she had received, through automatic writing. I had since then, had the desire to visit Meherabad, a colony near Ahmedanagar, which is approximately a 2 hour drive from Pune. Last fortnight, I had the opportunity to visit the place! Maybe it would be better to state that Meher Baba called me. It is said that, one can only set foot on holy pilgrim centers, only when the Bulaava comes! Meherabad was serene. The Pilgrim Center was comfortable. The Pilgrims at the Pilgrim Center were friendly and helpful. The ‘Samaaddhi’ was inhabited by Meher Baba. He was there. One could feel him! Meher Baba said that he has not come to teach but to awaken! He was silent for 44 years! From July 10, 1925 until he passed away on Jan.31, 1969. He observed silence for more than 3 decades because ‘man had been deaf to the principles and precepts laid down by God in the past…enough words had been asked for and given, and now it was time to live them!’ He said that to be nearer and nearer to God one had to get further and further away from “I”, “my”, “me” and “mine”. To renounce the limited self, Grace is required, and Baba said that he had come to release that Grace. I hope to return to Meherabad soon to experience the ‘Grace’ again. The same week, I also visited ‘Splendor Country’ which is a 1 hour drive from Pune. My friend owns a house there. It is on top of a hill surrounded by greenery and clouds! It was a treat for the soul! That is right, it was ‘Dal-sabzi for the Aatman’ The gross body survives on food, water and air. The Spiritual body requires peace love and fresh air to thrive on! These trips revive the spirit! I strongly recommend them from time to time! Reader's ResponseFrom VishalA reader, Vishal informs me that Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the incarnation of Lord Krishna about 500 years back had changed the mahamantra (reversed it to be precise) for the coming 10,000 years to make it possible for the common man to go back, back to Godhead. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu came from one of the only 4 authorized Guru-Disciple Succession (Gaudiya Math) authorized by our scriptures. If He has changed the mahamantra, why is it that the old practice is still being followed? Should it not be:-
